Get the Most from Your Military-Grade Fasteners

Posted on: 22 October 2018

Military-grade fasteners are useful for an important reason—they're very durable. However, while their increased reliability is an inherent feature, there are some steps you can take to further improve the reliability of the fasteners. Before you select or install your new military-grade fasteners, ensure you know how to maximize your benefits.

1. Evaluate Your Need

Don't choose a fastener without first reevaluating your needs. First, start with the manufacturer requirements. Typically, machinery requires a specific style of fastener, such as machine screws or hex washers. If you fail to review this information beforehand, you're more likely to end up with the wrong fastener style. Secondly, ensure the manufacturer does not require OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) parts. All of this information will ensure you choose the right selection.

2. Chose Quality over Quantity

Cost control is an undoubtedly important factor, but it should only represent one element of your fastener search. It's essential that your machinery operates with a high level of precision, and this goal is only achievable if it's outfitted with parts that are designed with the same goal in mind. Do your research and look for retailers that have certified military-grade fasteners. The certification will represent fasteners that have been tested and verified to perform at a military-grade level.

3. Install with Precision

The manner in which you install the fastener is just as important as the quality of the fastener you choose. If you don't fit the fastener correctly, it won't perform as it should. Most important is to ensure that you use the right type of tool for installation. If the torque of the tool is not powerful enough, you may not get a precise fit. You should also keep in mind that one tool may work for one type of military-grade fastener and not another.

4. Calibrate Your Systems

Even after you've initially evaluated the quality of the fastener, it's a good idea to calibrate your systems. Recalibration is a way to bring your machinery back up to optimal efficiency, in terms of its operation, and it's also a great way to test the quality of the fastener. While in high-performance mode, a quality fastener will be able to function at an equal level. Issues with a fastener are not a good sign and are an indication that you might need to explore other options. If you don't replace the fastener, you'll likely face issues in the future.

Ensure you follow these tips to get the most from your military fastener installation for both the short and long term.
